Sun Network, which runs a bouquet of television channels in Kannada, has decided to shut down its news channel Udaya News. The operation of news channel will seize on October 24
In a mandatory filing before the Labour Department, Sun TV Network that owns the channel has said that the channel will stop telecast from October 24 and that 73 employees will lose their jobs.
“We have been operating Udaya News division for the last 19 years and have made substantial investments in building the news business in Karnataka. Despite our best efforts, the news division has been incurring substantial losses over the past couple of years.
Further, given the competition Udaya News has faced, the viewership share of Udaya News is also relatively low and that has further worsened the situation. Considering the above, we are compelled to close down Udaya News for business reasons as we are not able to justify the insurmountable losses which have been accumulated and which it continues to incur.” read the statement.
According to BARC ratings, Udaya News is in the sixth place fighting for the spot with other channels. TV 9 tops the TRP charts followed by Public TV and Suvarna News.
There are 13 news channels in Kannada, and at least three more new news channels viz Focus TV, TV1 and TV5, are on the way in the already crowded market.
